To obtain authorization to engage in the independent practice of midwifery, a certified nurse-midwife must meet the following: be licensed to practice professional nursing under the Kansas Nurse Practice Act; completed a course of study in nurse-midwifery in a school of nurse-midwifery approved by the board; completed a national certification approved by the board; completed a refresher course if not actively practiced in the five years preceding application; be authorized by the Kansas State Board of Nursing to perform the duties of a certified nurse-midwife; be licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse by the Kansas State Board of Nursing; paid all fees. Required to complete continuing education, maintain professional liability insurance, and be compliant with the Kansas Health Care Stabilization Fund.
